Plastering & Rendering in Brighton & East Sussex

Plastering is the canvas upon which the rest of your interior design sits. No matter how expensive your paint or wallpaper is, it will never look right if the walls beneath are uneven, cracked, or rough. Ridge Group Contracting provides high-end plastering and rendering services in Brighton, Hove, and East Sussex. We transform rough brickwork and tired ceilings into smooth, glass-like surfaces ready for decoration. Our team is experienced in all aspects of wet plastering, dry lining, and external rendering.

Internal Plastering Services

Whether you are renovating a single room or plastering a whole new build, we deliver a superior finish.

Skimming (Re-skimming)

This is our most common service. Over time, walls get dinged, cracked, or covered in layers of wallpaper. We prepare the walls by scraping back loose material and applying a bonding agent (PVA or Blue Grit). We then apply a two-coat “skim” of multi-finish plaster. The result is a brand-new, perfectly smooth surface that makes the room look instantly modern and clean. We are experts at covering over 1970s Artex ceilings, burying the texture to leave a flat, modern finish.

Dry Lining (Plasterboarding)

For new stud walls, ceilings, or uneven masonry, we use plasterboard.

  • Tacking: Screwing boards to timber studs or ceiling joists.

  • Dot and Dab: Adhering boards directly to blockwork walls using drywall adhesive. This is a quick and clean way to line a room and provides an extra layer of insulation.

  • Once boarded, we can either tape and joint (for a quick finish) or skim the entire surface for a higher quality feel.

Float and Set

This is the traditional method of applying a backing coat of hardwall or bonding plaster to masonry, followed by a finish skim. It provides a solid, dense wall surface with excellent soundproofing and durability qualities.

External Rendering

The outside of your house needs protection and style. We offer modern and traditional rendering systems.

Sand and Cement Render

The traditional choice. We apply a scratch coat followed by a top coat, which is then sponged or floated to a smooth finish. This usually requires painting afterwards.

Monocouche (K-Rend / Weber)

These are modern, “through-coloured” renders. The pigment is in the mix, meaning you never have to paint the house. It is breathable, water-repellent, and flexible, making it resistant to cracking. It gives a crisp, modern look that is very popular on Brighton renovations.

Silicone Thin Coat Systems

Applied over external wall insulation boards, this system is incredibly flexible and self-cleaning. It is the gold standard for energy-efficiency upgrades.

Lime Plastering for Period Homes

Using modern gypsum plaster on old, solid-walled properties in Sussex can cause damp issues because it seals moisture into the wall. For heritage restoration, we use lime plaster. Lime is breathable (“hygroscopic”), allowing the walls to manage humidity naturally. We use traditional 3-coat lime work (scratch, float, and setting coat) for a finish that is sympathetic to the building’s age and health.

The Ridge Group Promise

Plastering is a messy job by nature, but we work hard to contain it.

  • Protection: We cover all floors, windows, and doors with heavy-duty protection before mixing a single bag of plaster.

  • Cleanliness: We clean our mixing area daily and remove all waste.

  • Quality: We use lights to check our trowel work, ensuring there are no ripples or trowel marks. Corners and beads are always sharp and plumb.
